Back in the late ’70’s, I spent several years making welded-metal sculpture for a living. Luckily for me, the owners of the company I worked for were hugely supportive of my artistic endeavors, and gave me a great deal of freedom to create personal art in my spare time. During that time, I came to be good friends with Vince Roark – a local savant who taught me geodesic math. This piece, and many other geodesic-based pieces, were created during that time. Keep in mind I had to calculate, and cut all the wire lengths by hand, then everything had to be welded very accurately, as a mistake in one place would throw everything else off.
